Ok, I know these are lower quality phone pictures, but that is because I haven't braved the chance of taking my Canon into this wet canyon...But oh do I mean to!
This little Oasis is a hidden gem located in Guffey Gorge, privately owned land who's owner has kept it open to the public so that we may enjoy it's beauty and magic for ourselves.
The trail itself is about a mile long, and is moderately trafficked, especially in the summer. Over the years a parking area and rest stop has been established at the trail head.
It features a mile long trail with a little more than a 100 ft elevation increase. you begin on a small trail that descends into a breathtaking meadow with a crystal clear stream flowing through it, feeding the waterfall around the bend, and wildflowers flourish in the warmer months. A somewhat steep gravel switchback leads down to a lagoon-colored swimming hole with a small waterfall feeding it. There are large, smooth boulders to relax on and the water is snowmelt cold, so be prepared! The water is deepest along the left against the wall as well as at the base of the waterfall. The water level varies so always get in and check the depth if you're planning on jumping from the granite cliffs! On a busy day you can see people up on the canyon walls cliff jumping and little ones splashing in the dammed up shallows, as adults line the area with blankets and beverages. It really is the best summer hangout spot to get your tan on and relax! You can also follow the trail a little ways into the lush, high-walled canyon before it gets more difficult.
BONUS FACT: Along that second portion of trail is a Geocache hidden in the walls if you're keen enough to try and find it!
All in all, it is a doable hike for all ages for the most part, and just an absolutely beautiful hike. The rangers visit often so read the rules about glass containers when you arrive!
To get there:
-From Colorado Springs, take Hwy 24/Cimarron up the pass towards Woodland Park
-Keep left in Woodland Park and follow the hwy towards Divide
-Take the Twin Rocks Rd exit on your left just past Divide
-Turn left onto Teller County Rd 1
-Turn right onto County Rd 11
-Turn right onto Teller Count Rd 1
-Continue onto Co Rd 102
-There will be a pull off on both sides of the road and the trail begins on the right side of the rd where a bulletin board is located.
Be sure to always check that bulletin board so you're up to date on current information about the canyon!
